Fixing Sentence Fragments
What is a Sentence Fragment?A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence that lacks a main clause. It's like having part of a thought without expressing a complete idea.
Three Ways to Fix Sentence Fragments:
- Add the Missing Subject or Verb:
- Identify the missing part in the fragment – either the subject (who or what the sentence is about) or the verb (the action or state of being).
- Example Fragment: "Jumped over the fence."
- Revised: "The cat jumped over the fence."
- Combine with Another Sentence:
- If you have a fragment that could go well with another sentence, try combining them to create a complete thought.
- Example Fragment: "A rainbow in the sky. It appeared after the rain."
- Revised: "A rainbow in the sky appeared after the rain."
- Use Subordinating Conjunctions:
- Connect the fragment to a complete sentence using subordinating conjunctions (after, although, because, if, since, until, etc.).
- Example Fragment: "Eating popcorn at the movies. The movie was exciting."
- Revised: "While eating popcorn at the movies, the movie was exciting."
