Coordinating Conjunctions

What is a Coordinating Conjunction?

  • A coordinating conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or sentences that are equally important.

Remember FANBOYS:

  • FANBOYS is an acronym to help you remember the seven coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.

How to Spot Coordinating Conjunctions:

  1. Look for Joining Words:
    • Coordinating conjunctions are like traffic signs for sentences. They join similar parts together.
    • Example: "I wanted pizza, but she preferred burgers."
  2. Check for Equal Ideas:
    • Coordinating conjunctions connect things that are equally important. Both sides of the sentence should be able to stand alone.
    • Example: "He likes soccer, and she enjoys basketball."
  3. Remember FANBOYS:
    • Memorize FANBOYS to easily recall the coordinating conjunctions. Each letter represents a different conjunction.
    • Example: "We can play video games, or we can go to the park."
