Using RACE

What is RACE?

RACE is a strategy to help you respond to constructed response reading questions more effectively. It stands for Restate, Answer, Cite, and Explain.

1. Restate (R):

  • Before diving into your answer, restate the question in your own words. This helps you make sure you understand what's being asked.
  • Example Question: "What is the main idea of the passage?"
  • Restate: "The main idea of the passage is..."

2. Answer (A):

  • Provide a direct response to the question. Keep it clear and concise. Your answer should directly address what the question is asking.
  • Example: "The main idea of the passage is the importance of protecting the environment."

3. Cite (C):

  • Support your answer by citing evidence from the text. Quote specific phrases or sentences that back up your response. This shows you've found information to support your claim.
  • Example: "According to the text, it states, 'Taking care of the environment is crucial for the well-being of our planet.'"

4. Explain (E):

  • Explain why your citation supports your answer. Connect the dots for the reader, showing how the evidence directly relates to the question.
  • Example: "This supports the main idea because it highlights the connection between environmental protection and the overall well-being of our planet. It emphasizes the significance of taking care of our surroundings."

Putting It All Together:

  • Combining all elements, your complete response could look like this:
    • "The main idea of the passage is the importance of protecting the environment. According to the text, it states, 'Taking care of the environment is crucial for the well-being of our planet.' This supports the main idea because it highlights the connection between environmental protection and the overall well-being of our planet. It emphasizes the significance of taking care of our surroundings."

Tips:

  • Take your time reading the passage to fully understand it.
  • Use evidence directly from the text to support your answer.
  • Be clear and organized in your response.
  • Double-check to make sure your answer directly addresses the question.
